Chapter Twenty-One
The pungent odor of gunpowder assaulted Nora as the air thickened with battle cries, gunfire illuminating the grim scene in a series of strobes casting shadows across the floor as Chifladoâs LVA crew stormed the warehouse with their weapons blazing.
âStay with me,â Nora commanded, dragging Daphne behind a crate as the warring factions traded gunfire.
Bullets zipped through the air, embedding themselves into the crates with sickening thuds and sending splinters flying through the air.
The metallic clang of empty shells raining onto the concrete was a chaotic backbeat behind Daphneâs choking breaths.
âItâll be okay,â Nora promised.
âHow do you know that? It definitely seems like we could die here!â
âDonât say that! Youâre supposed to be the optimistic one!â
âYouâre right!â Daphne seemed to gather herself behind the crate, remembering who she was as she said, âI would rather die of embarrassment than let these bullets kill me!â
âIâm not sure those two things are related, but I do like that positive outlook.â
Nora peered around the crate to catch a glimpse of Chiflado commanding his crew as they moved with synchronized precision. Ricocheting bullets and charging shadows ⦠it was a war zone, and if Nora didnât get her and Daphne out of it right now, they would be two more bodies buried among the rubble.
âWe need to move!â Nora pointed toward the doorway.
âHow are we supposed to do that without getting shot?â Daphne looked around at the fracas. âShouldnât we just wait until all of this gunfire stops?â
âIf we donât get out of here now, weâll be even more trapped in the middle of this chaos than we already are. Weâre dead unlessâ ââ
âFine!â Daphne shouted over the gunfire. âWhat do we do?â
âFollow me.â Nora swallowed and went for it, keeping low to avoid the hail of gunfire.
A bullet screamed past, grazing the space just above her head, forcing Nora to instinctively hunker down even lower.
Through the smoky haze, her eyes locked onto the exit door. She clutched Daphneâs hand, and they pressed their bodies to the gritty floor, slithering like serpents through a tempest of bullets.
âAre you ready to run?â Nora asked.
âNO!â Daphne shouted. âBut Iâll follow you anyway!â
Nora made a mad dash for the exit with Daphne just behind her as bullets hissed by them. Daphne belted out with a sharp cry, her momentum broken as she collapsed onto the concrete like a marionette with its strings cut.
Noraâs heart constricted at the sight: Daphne had been shot.
She scrambled back to her friendâs crumpled form.
With trembling hands, she rolled Daphne over to see the crimson stain seeping into her sleeve. A vicious gash from a bulletâs unforgiving kiss on her arm.
âThank God.â Nora exhaled.
âWhat do you mean, âThank Godâ? Iâve been shot!â
âIt could have been worse, Daphne.â
Nora grabbed her by the good arm, but instead of heading toward the exit again, which was now under heavy fire, she yanked Daphne in the other direction, heading back behind the crates to where Nora had seen a first aid kit hanging on the wall.
âWhy are you taking us back into the danger zone?â Daphne asked.
